Xiaomi unveils Mi Pad 2 to take on Apple iPad mini

Xiaomi has finally played its cards and unveiled the Mi Pad 2 with a slimmer yet more powerful hardware than the last year’s Mi Pad to take on Apple iPad mini. The new Mi Pad model comes with Android and Windows options and features an all-metal built that is quite identical to the iPad Mini 4.

The Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 has a 7.9-inch display with 2048 x 1536 pixels resolution that makes a pixel density of 326ppi, which is the same as on the iPad mini 4. Under the hood, there is a 64-bit 2.24GHz Intel Atom X5-Z8500 processor along with Intel HD Graphics and 2GB of LPDDR3 RAM. The tablet has 16GB and 64GB storage options, and packs a 6,190mAh battery that is claimed to deliver about 650 hours of standby time on a single charge.

Xiaomi has provided Android Lollipop-based MIUI 7 on the Android version of the Mi Pad 2, while its Windows version has Microsoft’s Windows 10 operating system. There are some preloaded features to give an edge to the iPad mini, including a reading mode and an option that automatically inactivates all the touch-sensitive capacitive keys.

The Mi Pad 2 comes in Dark Grey and Champagne Gold color options, with 6.95mm thickness and 322 grams weight. These dimensions make the new Mi Pad model slimmer and lighter than its predecessor that was 8.5mm thick and weighed 360 grams.

The Windows version, on the other hand, will go on sale only in 64GB storage variants be the end of December for 1,299 yuan (approximately Rs. 13,500).

The announcement of the Mi Pad 2 highlights that the Beijing-based company is all-set to expand its business across major overseas markets.
