Xiaomi could start smartphone production in India through Inventec factory

After selling one million smartphones last year, Xiaomi seems to be all-set to start its smartphone production in India to gain further. The smartphone production could begin through an Inventec factory later this year.

According to a report by DigiTimes, original design manufacturer (ODM) Inventec plans to set up production lines at a leased factory in Chennai, southern India, with production to begin at the end of the second or beginning of the third quarter this year.

Inventec has not yet revealed any details about what kinds of devices will be manufactured at the reported Chennai factory, However, the news source reports, citing industry watchers, that the production lines are likely to initially roll out smartphones and other devices for Xiaomi.

The production facilities in its Chennai factory is expected to meet Inventec’s production demand for the next couple of years. Meanwhile, the company’s chairman Richard Lee stated that its shipments of ODM/OEM devices to rose 33 percent to one billion units this year and of the total products to be produced, smartphone shipments are expected to surge to 60 million units this year.

The reported Chennai factory could be the infamous Nokia’s plant which the Finnish company left in November last year after facing tax evasion charges by the authorities. Moreover, the factory could start a new chapter for Xiaomi.

Beijing-based Xiaomi entered India in July last year with partnering Flipkart as its exclusive sale partner. The company launched the Mi3 as its first smartphone and following its success in the market, it brought most of its popular offerings including the Redmi 1S, Redmi Note, Redmi Note 4G and Mi4.

Alongside launching the Mi4 last month, Xiaomi revealed its plans for launching an e-commerce portal for selling its new devices in India. The company, which currently operates through an office in Bengaluru under the leadership of Manu Kumar Jain, is quite keen to establish its production center in the country to bolster its sales.

Xiaomi raised $1.1 billion in a fresh funding in December last year at a valuation of $45 billion. In a recent announcement, the company revealed that it sold over 61.1 million smartphone units last year, of which one million smartphones shipped in India.
