Xiaomi sells 1 million smartphones in India since debut

While the world is celebrating Christmas, Xiaomi has one more reason to celebrate today as it has sold one million smartphones in India within five months since its debut in July.

Manu Kumar Jain, Head of Mi India – subsidiary of Xiaomi, revealed the new achievement through a tweet posted on Thursday. Jain said that his company reached to a major milestone by selling as many as one million smartphones in India.

To celebrate the success with its fans, Mi India announced a contest through its Facebook page in which the company is giving away three of its Redmi Note 4G smartphones.

Beijing-based Xiaomi entered India with partnering e-commerce giant Flipkart for selling its devices online. The company brought the Mi3 as its first offering in the Indian market which received overwhelming response from the first day it went on sale through Flipkart. Thereafter, the company launched the Redmi 1S and Redmi Note as two of its new smartphones under Rs. 10,000 price bracket.

Xiaomi started its operations in India by adopting a unique flash sale model under which customers need to pre-register for purchasing their order through Flipkart. This model helped the company in generating more demand than any other new entrant in the country.

The journey to India was not easy for Xiaomi as it faced tough competition from some of the Indian smartphone vendors like Micromax and Karbonn as well as from Android maker Google as it introduced its Android One initiative in just a couple of months after the debut of the Chinese company in the market. The company was also alleged for sending out its users’ personal data to servers in China.

Moreover, Xiaomi recently faced a ban by the Delhi High Court over a suit filed by Ericsson for allegedly infringing its Standard-Essential Patents (SEPs). The company had suspended its sales due to the court’s order on December 12 but it got some relief on December 16 and then resumed the sales of its Redmi 1S in the country earlier this week.

Xiaomi now all-set to start selling the Redmi Note 4G in the country starting next week through its flash sale model on Flipkart. There are also plans for launching the Mi4 early next year and the company is also in development to localise its production in the country.
