Its Camera

Xiaomi Redmi 1S is an entry-level smartphone but its camera specifications are making it closer to a mid-range smartphone with all goodies and comfort of manual settings which are so far exclusive to the high-end smartphones. To give impressive camera results, the Redmi 1S features an 8-megapixel camera sensor on the rear and a 1.6-megapixel camera sensor is available on the front.

The rear camera sensor of the Redmi 1S has five-piece plastic lens with f/2.2 aperture and 28mm wide-angle coverage. An LED flash is also available for taking shots under dark and it can also be worked as a video light during night shoots.

The Redmi 1S camera, on the software front, is quite similar to the one that we earlier tested through the Mi3. There is a simple interface with a shutter button on the right and buttons to swipe from the rear camera to front camera and from still photography to camcorder modes are available on the left. Users have a decent-sized viewfinder for viewing the subjects and objects before taking shots and a preview window is available on the bottom-right for previewing the previously taken shots. In terms of manual controls, the Camera app on the Redmi 1S allows users to pick any of the preset white balance and ISO as well as enables to set exposure and Switch between AF to Macro.

We tested the camera performance of the Redmi 1S by taking shots under different environments and some of the results are available below. The smartphone gave us an impressive experience while taking shots under a variety of environment. The amount of color production and contrast are just close to perfect and noise levels cannot be seen even under dark shots. Moreover, the presence of the LED flash on the rear is just a charm for taking shots under dark. The only downside that we noticed on the camera avenue is the slow speed of focusing at subjects though it is not a major issue.

The front camera of the Redmi 1S is capable of producing attractive selfies. Users can also use it for VoIP and video chats as it supports 720p (HD) video recording, the experience would not give any disappointments.

The Redmi 1S, on the part of recording videos, is just a perfect entry-level smartphone to buy today. There is 1080p (full-HD) video recording support available on the rear camera along with 30fps frame rate. We have not found any issue on the camcorder front and basic parameters such as color production, contrast ratio and detailing in the videos are quite impressive on the Redmi 1S if we compare with its competitors. The presence of a secondary microphone additionally helps users in recording crystal clear audio while recording videos with the Redmi 1S.

This states that the overall camera performance of the affordable Redmi 1S is just amazing. Users would not be disappointed with its results and in case if some of them would be, they are suggested to pick a mid-range smartphone.
