Xiaomi Mi 5 goes official with Snapdragon 820 SoC and 3D ceramic design

Xiaomi today finally unveiled the anticipated Mi 5 at its event at the ongoing MWC in Barcelona. The new smartphone features a 3D ceramic design that has a 3D glass protection on the rear.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 emerges as the successor to the Mi 4 that the company launched in 2014. The new smartphone comes in three different variants where the top-end one has 4GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 128GB UFS 2.0 storage, and the other two variants have 3GB of RAM and 64GB and 32GB flash storage options. All the three variants have 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset with a 2.15GHz octa-core CPU. Moreover, they are claimed to have a durable ceramic build that comes at 8H on the Mohs hardness scale.

Xiaomi Mi 5 sports a 3D ceramic design with 3D glass panel

Xiaomi has provided a 5.15-inch IPS display on the Mi 5 with 1920 x 1080 pixels (full-HD) resolution. There is a 16-megapixel Sony IMX298 camera sensor on the back side while a 4-megapixel camera sensor with 2-micron pixel size is available on the front. Also, the company has provided a Spectra image processor and DTI isolation technology to enhance image results as well as to enable 4K video recording.

The smartphone has dual-SIM support with 4G and VoLTE support. It also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS, NFC and a USB Type-C port. Further, it packs a 3,000mAh battery that comes equipped with Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0 technology.

Unlike the Mi 4 that ran on Android 4.4 KitKat, the Mi 5 runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box. There is MIUI 7 on top of the latest Android version. The proprietary skin provides access to hundreds of themes and a feature called “loss prevention” that locks user data if the device is lost or theft. Besides, there is a fingerprint sensor to add security on the hardware level.

The Xiaomi Mi 5 will go on sale in China with a starting price of 1,999 yuan (approximately Rs. 21,000). It will be available in black, white and gold color options with just 129 grams of weight.

Beijing-based Xiaomi hasn’t revealed any of its plans for launching the Mi 5 flagship in India. However, it is expected to be arrived in the country some time later this year.
