Xiaomi could launch ‘smart’ running shoes this year

After remarking success in selling smartphones and its Mi Band, Xiaomi now seems to be all-set to soon launch “smart” running shoes. These shoes are reportedly being in development through a collaboration by Li Ning and Xiaomi’s Huami Technology.

According to a report by Reuters, citing a statement made by China’s Li Ning, Xiaomi is in development of its “smart” running shoes, which will be available later this year. These new kind of wearables would work with an app that will let users keep track of their progress and fitness results right on their smartphones.

“We have chosen to collaborate with the Mi band because of Huami Technology’s strength in “smart” wearable products. We hope to use this opportunity to provide professional “smart” running shoes to running enthusiasts in China at an affordable price,” Li Ning said in the statement.

Although, Xiaomi and Li Ning have not yet revealed any details about their smart shoes, the cited statement suggests that these shoes would make a reform in the current sport shoe market with their affordable price tag and some “smart” capabilities, especially designed for running enthusiasts.

Li Ning is one of the popular sports brand companies in China that headquartered in Beijing, the same state from Xiaomi operates its business. The company signed a multi-million dollar sponsorship deal with NBA basketball player Dwayne Wade in 2013 and has been targeted its products mainly at young audience in the region.

Xiaomi, on the other hand, is quite popular for selling its affordable smartphones in the major Asian markets, including India, Philippines and Singapore, except its hometown market in China. The company, apart from selling its smartphones, recently unveiled YiCamera action camera to compete against GoPro’s HERO series and HTC RE and is in plans to launch its smartwatch sometime in the coming future.
