Why Apple Watch Edition at $10,000 price is too luxury for India

Why Apple Watch Edition at $10,000 price is too luxury for India

Apple last night finally announced the entire Apple Watch collection and revealed that this collection will include the most-expensive Apple Watch Edition, which comes with a starting price tag of $10,000 and would go up to $17,000. At this price, the Apple Watch Edition offers a unique 18-karat gold built to provide a highly premium design on the wrists on some users, though it will certainly not in the reach of many Apple fans even in the US and Canada. The scenario is completely different when it comes to some developing markets, especially India. Therefore, here we are covering that why Apple Watch Edition at its $10,000 price is too luxury in India.

The luxury Apple Watch Edition comes in 18-karat gold cases in yellow and rose to please users and has optional patterned straps and bands with gold-made clasps, buckles and pins. In addition, it features a Retina display that has been protected by a polished sapphire crystal.

Although, the functionality and specifications of the Apple Watch Edition are as same as that of the original Apple Watch, which is priced at $349, the premium built on the latter one uplifts its manufacturing costs and thus resulting the whopping base price of $10,000, close to Rs. 8 lakh in India.

Interestingly, Apple is not a company that makes the most luxury watches in the world but its Watch Edition could soon make it listed among the makers of luxury watches such as Richard Mille, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe.

The current trend in the Indian market is quite different from what in the developed regions like the US and Canada and most of these luxury brands are not even forayed into the market due to very less number of their buyers.

Taking that view in mind, the Cupertino giant would not take a decision to launch the Apple Watch Edition in India. But it will be a surprise move if the company will bring the luxury smartwatch to the Indian market with great confidence. The domestic smartwatch market would get its most expensive offering and aristocrats will get another chance to highlight the income distribution gap in the Indian economy.

The recently emerged smartwatch market in India so far has Motorola’s Moto 360 as the most expensive Android Wear smartwatch while Samsung Gear S, on the other hand, is the most expensive smartwatch in the overall market.

Instead of buying these expensive smartwatches in the market, many Indian buyers, even some innovators and early adopters, purchased affordable smartwatches like LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live and Gear 2 to get a similar smartwatch experience.

This suggests that the consumer pattern in the Indian market is not as same as in the US and Canada but still people are started opting for new technologies which are available in their budget. Moreover, a large of Apple fans in India are quite influenced by the original Apple Watch.

In the case of the Apple Watch Edition, chances are quite low that the Indian buyers would take their buying decision just for sake of a tiny screen that has been crafted by gold.

There are several reasons that a large number of customers would not buy the luxury Apple Watch Edition in India. Among those reasons, the first and the foremost reason is that this is just another smartwatch which will not work as a standalone device when it comes to telephony or cannot fulfil users’ computing requirements.

All this confirms that the Apple Watch Edition is too luxury for India despite of its premium design and 18-karat gold built. Customers would alternatively pick the original Apple Watch to satisfy their needs and to experience the all-new Apple Watch ecosystem on their wrists.
