Videocon smartphone portfolio to feature ‘panic button’

Videocon has announced that its entire smartphone portfolio will come with a ‘panic button’ in India. The company has also launched the Videocon Cube 3 with an ‘SOS-Be Safe’ emergency response app.

The proprietary ‘SOS-Be Safe’ app lets users send an alert to their contacts in case of an emergency right by pressing the physical power button on the smartphone. The app comes with ‘Walk with Me’ feature to deliver frequent messages to some preset numbers if the users cross a fixed distance. Also, it includes ‘Reach on Time’ feature to track users on their journey and send alert to the emergency contacts if they don’t reach their destination within the fixed time.

“With smartphones impacting our lives in many ways, emergency response system or panic button is certainly the need of the hour,” said Akshay Dhoot, head of technology and innovation, Videocon, in a press statement.

Alongside the emergency response app, the Videocon Cube 3 features a 5-inch HD IPS display and 13-megapixel rear camera sensor. The Android Marshmallow running smartphone is powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core processor along with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage. Besides, the Videocon smartphone packs a 3,000mAh battery and comes with a price tag of Rs. 8,490.

The new development emerges as a strategic move by Videocon to support the government’s provision to enable emergency response features on mobile devices.

In August last year, Huawei announced the debut of an SOS feature on its Honor smartphone range. Indian vendor iBall also launched its women-centric Andi Udaan with a dedicated panic button functionality.
