TAG Heuer, Intel and Google partner to develop luxury Android Wear smartwatch
Competing against the Apple Watch, TAG Heuer has announced its partnership with Intel and Google for developing its first luxury Android Wear smartwatch. The TAG Heuer smartwatch will feature a new technology designed by Swiss watchmaker and Silicon Valley giants.
TAG Heuer has made the official announcement about its new partnership at Baselworld in Switzerland. The company says that the smartwatch will be both “luxurious and seamlessly connected to its wearer’s daily life” using Google’s Android Wear platform and Intel’s new chipset.
The final version of their development will be available in the form of a full-fledged luxury Android Wear smartwatch sometime by the end of this year. Meanwhile, TAG Heuer reveals that this new smartwatch will be “a culmination of innovation, creativity and design”.
On announcing the collaboration, Jean-Claude Biver, President of the Watch Division LVMH Group and CEO of TAG Heuer, said:
“Swiss watchmaking and Silicon Valley is a marriage of technological innovation with watchmaking credibility. Our collaboration provides a rich host of synergies, forming a win-win partnership and the potential for our three companies is enormous.”
TAG Heuer is a renowned watchmaker that has been designing watches and chronographs with premium design and high-end features since 1860. However, it has not yet unveil any of its development for the recently emerged smartwatch market.
Intel, on the other hand, is not a newbie for the smartwatch market like TAG Heuer as it already partnered with brands like Fossil and Opening Ceremony to start working on smartwatches, or at least smart wearables.
Commenting on the partnership with TAG Heuer, Michael Bell, Corporate Vice President and General Manager of Intel’s New Devices Group, said:
“As we work to enable technology experiences that provide greater utility and value to people, Intel is confident that a collective approach will inspire new innovation in wearable technology. The collaboration with TAG Heuer and Google brings us closer to realizing the vision of wearable technology with a distinctive smartwatch that elevates the category.”
The new smartwatch could be among the first few Android Wear smartwatches that have Intel chipset and luxury design. While its features are expected to be as same as on other Android Wear smartwatches, it may have an all-new built and a high-end price tag to take on the upcoming Apple Watch.
