Sony has announced that it has started rolling out Android 5.1 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 lineup. The update is released as an over-the-air (OTA) update and comes with some proprietary features.

The Android 5.1 Lollipop update is rolling out for the Sony Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

The update brings the latest Android Lollipop to the Xperia Z lineup that has some improvements over Android 5.0. These improvements include device protection, high-definition (HD) voice calling functionality and some enhanced quick settings.

Apart from the stock improvements, Sony has added some proprietary features to the Android Lollipop update that include increased customisation options, a deeper LinkedIn integration, some camera improvements and enhanced enterprise support. The update also comes with SmartWear integration to provide users integrated features for wearables.

As the Android 5.1 update is rolling out in phases, it would take time to reach across all the units under Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 lineup. Users can manually check the update availability on their devices by going to Settings > About Phone > Software update.

Sony says that the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z Ultra will be the next devices to get the new Android update. This will start rolling out over the coming weeks, followed by the Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia C3. Also, there are plans to provide a similar update on the original Xperia Z series as well as on affordable Xperia M2 and Xperia M2 Aqua.

In March, Sony rolled out Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 devices. The update had brought Google’s Material Design language on both the flagships.

Although Sony initially revealed that it would only provide future Android Lollipop updates to Xperia Z series flagships, it has now been seeding new software updates to almost all its compatible smartphones to improve its market position.
