Samsung, Oculus launch $99 Gear VR with Netflix, Facebook and Twitch content support

Samsung and Oculus today partnered to launch all-new Gear VR headset with an affordable price tag of $99. The headset additionally comes with Netflix, Facebook and Twitch content support and is available as an upgraded version over the last year launched Gear VR Innovator Edition.

The Samsung Gear VR consumer edition is compatible with all the latest Galaxy series flagship smartphones, including the Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge+ and Galaxy S6 edge. The company claims that the VR headset is 22 percent lighter than the Gear VR Innovator Edition and comes with a foam cushioning to deliver a comfortable virtual reality experience.

On announcing the launch of the new Gear VR, JK Shin, CEO and President of IT & Mobile Division, Samsung Electronics, said:

We see virtual reality as the next computing platform, and we are thrilled to partner with Oculus on Gear VR to set the standard for mobile VR and bring this revolutionary product to consumers.”

Samsung has partnered with Facebook-owned Oculus to integrate its proprietary VR technology that debuted on the Oculus Rift earlier this year. In addition, the company has announced its partnership with content providers such as Netflix and Twitch to deliver consumers a full-fledged virtual reality solution.

Commenting on the partnership, Brendan Iribe, CEO, Oculus, said:

“Together with Samsung, we’ve redefined virtual reality and created the best mobile VR experience available today. On Gear VR, people are playing immersive VR games with friends, sharing 360 video experiences, and teleporting around the world with photos and videos – and it’s only the beginning for what’s possible with mobile VR.”

Weighing at 310 grams, the Gear VR has an array of sensors that includes accelerometer, gyrometer and a proximity sensor. it has an field of view of 96 degrees and comes with a microUSB port to offer wired connectivity with compatible smartphones.

The Samsung Gear VR with Frost White color option will be available in the US starting this fall.
