Samsung’s unofficial source SamMobile has leaked some details about the upcoming Gear VR headset in its recent report. The source claims that the Korean manufacturer is currently working on the Gear VR as its first virtual reality headset and is set to announce the same at the IFA this year, alongside the Galaxy Note 4.

The source reports that Samsung is making the Gear VR headset as companion device for its Galaxy range of smartphones, similar to the recently unveiled Google Cardboard, instead of making a standalone virtual reality headset like Oculus Rift, which is in development by Facebook.

Being a companion device, the Gear VR is reported to have a modular design that will allow users to dock in a Galaxy device into the Gear VR using USB 3.0. The headset will provide virtual reality effect by using accelerometer, gyroscope and processing power of the docked smartphone.

The Gear VR is said to have a see-through button on its right which uses the rear-facing camera sensor of the smartphone to give the user with a video feed of the real world, outside the virtual world. A touchpad will also be available under the button to enable navigation through menu options.

The report reveals that the hardware of the Gear VR is in development by Samsung, whereas its software side is being developed by Oculus VR, the company behind Oculus Rift. This does not means that Samsung Apps will not be available on the company’s first virtual reality headset and apps like Theatre, 360 Player and Gallery will be some of the initial apps. In addition, an SDK will also be available to the developers soon after the official announcement.
