Samsung Gear 360 camera lets you develop VR content through Galaxy series devices

Samsung Gear 360 camera lets you develop VR content through Galaxy series devices

In addition to the Galaxy S7 models, Samsung announced the Gear 360 camera at its MWC conference in Barcelona on Sunday evening. The new camera is the company’s first attempt to let you develop VR content yourself, with the help of a high-end Galaxy series device.

The Samsung Gear 360 features dual fisheye lenses with 15-megapixel image sensors to capture 360-degree video content in 3840×1920 pixels resolution. The camera also supports still images with up to 30-megapixel resolution. Similar to some other 360-degree cameras, it provides you 180-degree wide angle footage from one side that combines in a complete 360-degree view using the dual-camera setup.

Samsung has developed an app that allows you to preview content on your Galaxy series smartphone directly from the Gear 360. Also, you can use your Galaxy device to edit some previous clips to develop some interesting and meaningful VR content. The content can be watched in the final form through the Gear VR headset.

The Gear 360 has an IP53-certified dust and water resistant build. Further, it has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC and a USB 2.0 on the connectivity front.

Unlike other devices to capture VR content, the Gear 360 is currently exclusive to select Samsung Galaxy devices. It is compatible with the newly unveiled Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge as well as the Galaxy S6 edge+, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6 edge and Galaxy S6.

‘A marketing vehicle’

Analysts believe that the Gear 360 is more like a “marketing vehicle” for the Galaxy S7 and Gear VR than a simple solution to enhance VR development as a whole. “Samsung smartphones will outsell the Gear 360 by over one thousand times this year,” says Ian Fogg, head of mobile analysis at IHS Technology, in a statement.

“But the Gear 360 is critical to help Samsung to persuade consumers it is time to upgrade their two or three-year-old smartphones, which cannot benefit from new VR experiences teased by the Gear 360. In effect, Gear 360 is a marketing vehicle for the Galaxy S7, as well as for Samsung’s Gear VR headset.”

The Gear 360 will also help Samsung stand in the recently emerged “modular mobile” trend. LG brought the G5 flagship with a modular design to take on the Galaxy S7. However, the Gear 360 would make the competition tougher for LG’s offering.

Samsung is set to launch the Gear 360 in select countries starting the second quarter of 2016. Its price details would be announced at a later date.
