Pebble announces Steel smartwatch for $249, launches appstore

After the two months of releasing the original smartwatch for the global market, Pebble has announced its premium Steel smartwatch at the CES 2014. Pebble Steel smartwatch comes with the price tag of $249, about $100 more than the original Pebble, and features an all-new stainless steel design. Aside the premium Steel smartwatch, Pebble appstore launched for Android and iOS to give all the apps and watchfaces under one roof.

Starting with the premium smartwatch, Pebble Steel is made of forged and CNC-machined stainless steel material that makes its design more appealing than the existing sporty Pebble. The company has also offered two finishes under the Steel branding – Brushed Stainless and Black Matte. Apart the steel built, the premium smartwatch has the crystal clear ePaper display, weeklong battery life and waterproof design, similar to the original Pebble. The new smartwatch is built with a thinner and smaller package to give more compact looks than the original Pebble.

Pebble Steel has Corning Gorilla Glass protection on the top with an oleophobic, anti-fingerprint coating. A RGB LED light is available to indicate charge status. The smartwatch comes with metal and leather straps inside the box and available for the global market with the pricing of $249.

As expected, Pebble has announced its own appstore to offer “a centralised location for users to discover, manage, and install apps and watchfaces”, designed for the smartwatch, directly to the Android and iOS devices. The company has announced that over 3 million apps and watchfaces were downloaded last year through all the third-party sources but this year, the download figure is set to be revealed through Pebble appstore itself.
