Opera Mini has emerged as the most downloaded Android app in India. The web browser is available across multiple mobile platforms, but it seemingly has the strongest presence on Android.
Qihoo 360-owned Opera Software has announced that Opera Mini is now the number-one app on Google Play Store in the country. “Opera Mini is getting a lot of love from Android users in India these days, and we are proud to say that the browser has now reached the #1 position on Google Play Store which means it is the most-download app in our big great country,” the company wrote in a press statement.
Opera Mini comes with some unique features to take on competitors like UC Browser and Mozilla Firefox. Based on Blink engine, the browser offers an advanced compression technology that is claimed to reduce webpages by up to 90 percent of their original size. There is also a ‘video boost’ feature to deliver a “buffer-less” experience on Android devices.
With more than 13 Indian languages, Opera Mini for Android comes in over 90 international languages. There are local languages such as Assamese, Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Oriya, Punjabi, Tamil and Urdu among others. Additionally, the browser includes a newsfeed in Hindi and Tamil languages.
Opera Software has Opera Mobile and Opera Coast browser apps alongside Opera Mini. In July, China’s internet security company Qihoo 360 acquired of the Norwegian company for $600 million. The acquisition got completed just earlier this month.
