While there are many smartwatches with some fashionable design, watchmaker Nixon is set to expand the smartwatch world with its first Android Wear model that has 10-ATM water resistance. The new smartwatch is also one of the world’s first wearables that have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 2100 chipset.

Called The Mission, the new Nixon smartwatch is designed as an “ultra-rugged” action sports offering with the latest Android Wear version. It is made of a polycarbonate and stainless steel shell along with 316L grade steel bezel and Corning Gorilla Glass protection. Also, the company has provided interchangeable silicone wristbands.

The USP of The Mission is its 10-ATM rated build that allows you to submerge the smartwatch 100 metres under water. This is touted to be the “highest waterproof rating” in the smartwatch market as of today.

“With current products splash-proof at best, we knew we had to create a smartwatch that could survive the surf or the first ride down the mountain,” says Tyson White, vice president of product, Nixon, in a statement. “By listening and implementing their feedback, The Mission became a unique collaboration between our athletes and our product team: we’ve created the 4×4 of smartwatches, ruggedly built for extreme situations.”

The Mission is targeted at those athletes and sports persons who want to have a smartwatch with a rugged build. Thus, it has the highest water resistance than all the other smartwatches available in the current market.

“We wanted to make our entrance into the smart category in a disciplined and purposeful way by bringing functions that are useful and true to our DNA and action sports heritage,” says Nick Stowe, CEO of Nixon. “Building The Mission, and the family of smart products to come, is Nixon’s leap into the future, and working with partners such as Google and Qualcomm Technologies has been an inspiring experience.”

Apart from its solid design, the Nixon smartwatch has high-end specifications to persuade regular smartwatch buyers. There is a full round AMOLED display and the Snapdragon 2100 chipset with a quad-core CPU and Bluetooth connectivity. Moreover, the company claims a long battery life to offer always-connected experiences.

California-based Nixon will launch The Mission at Baselworld later this month. After that, it will be available for purchase with a starting price of around $400 in the US.
