iOS 9 to be available as free download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on September 16
Alongside unveiling the iPad Pro and the iPhone 6s models, Apple on Wednesday announced that iOS 9 will be available as free download for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch on September 16. The update was originally announced at the WWDC 2015 back in June.
Apple’s iOS 9 will be available for the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus as well as for the iPod touch fifth-generation and later, iPad 2 and later and iPad mini first-generation and later. Compared to the large-size iOS 8 update, the iOS 9 update will come in a smaller package of over 1GB.
iOS 9 brings improved Siri features on all the compatible iPhone, iPad and iPod touch models. In addition, the new update comes with an enhanced multitasking experience for iPad. There is Picture-in-Picture view to let users play a video even while browsing the web or using another app.
Apple has bundled an updated Notes app with iOS 9 that comes with the Apple Pencil support and an updated Maps that offers detailed transit information. The update also comes with News app that provides real-time news alerts from mainstream media sources right on to the iOS device.
In terms of functionality, iOS 9 has proactive assistance to provide relevant information at a particular time in a day and there is an upgraded search to deliver more relevant results from different categories, namely sports scores and schedules, simple math calculations, weather conditions and stock prices.
iOS 9 has also been designed to be a by default source of enabling mobile payments via Apple Pay. There is a support called Discover to find new deals and stores at nearby locations and a Wallet app to let users easily manage their credit and debit cards.
Apple has not provided any major change on the interface front but iOS 9 does have Metal support that is claimed to help in delivering faster scrolling, smoother animation and better overall performance than what on iOS 8. Also, the new update is claimed to deliver an additional hour of battery life through its built-in battery optimisation and comes with a low-power mode to consume lesser power.
You can check iOS 9 update on your Apple device once it will be released on September 16 by going to Settings > General > Software update. The update will start rolling out in India at 10.30 p.m. and will be available for free download through the device itself as well as through iTunes.
