If you are an Instagram user, then you must have received the first ‘Highlights’ email earlier today. You are not alone as the Facebook-owned photo sharing service has started sending these kind of emails to all its users across the globe with an aim to get some attention.
As first reported by technology publication TechCrunch, Instagram’s ‘Highlights’ email works just on an email digest model that Twitter has been using from months to grab attention from its users. The email digest shows the best posts from the people users follow on their Instagram network.
Apart from just showing posts, each post on Highlights have a direct link to Instagram. This helps re-engaging users who’ve not been using Instagram from a long time.
The email additionally has an Unsubscribe link that lets users unsubscribe to the email digest anytime. However, as noted by Josh Constine of TechCrunch, there is not a single way to re-subscribe.
Overall, showing some popular posts as recaps through Highlights seems to be a good way to get some attention. But this is likely to be just a beginning as Instagram could add a few more features to promote its network that has over 300 million users worldwide.
In March this year, four-year-old Instagram finally added carousel ads as its newest source of monetisation through serving multi-page campaigns on mobile devices.
Instagram already has a strong presence on Android and iOS with features such as filters and short-length video recording and is expanding its platform with releasing additional apps like Layout from Instagram and Hyperlapse.
