Instagram is already quite popular among smartphone users. But a new claim has just emerged to show that Indians on Instagram largely prefer using their mobile phones to capture and upload their photos on the social network.

Citing a study conducted by Nielsen, Instagram claims that more than 80 percent of its total users in India use their mobile phones to take photos to post on the network. This comes as a result of the user base that majorly dominated by 18 to 24 age group. The Facebook-owned company told reporters at a press event in New Delhi that its monthly active users in the country have grown more than doubled over the past year as of September.

Instagram has over 400 million active users worldwide and among the last 100 million users, more than half are claimed to be living in Asia and Europe. The Nielsen study, titled “Indians on Instagram”, highlights that Indian users on the social network have key interests such as music, travel, food, photography, technology, fashion and sports. In addition, they use to express themselves among like-minded people, follow celebrity trends, discover information and updates on new trends and share food and travel options as well as to connect with friends.

“Instagram is the creative canvas for a young, passionate and mobile-first Indian community. People come to Instagram for visual inspiration and we are thrilled to offer solutions that create value for the Indian community and drive impactful business results for businesses of all sizes,” Kirthiga Reddy, managing director, Facebook India, says in a press note.

Instagram launched a platform for advertisers and marketers in September that started serving ads from some Indian companies including P&G, Nestle, Paper Boat, Grofers, TrulyMadly Matchmakers and Sportskeeda among others.

Over 50 percent of Indian Instagrammers are claimed to have frequently purchased products and services from the brands they follow. This perhaps helped the social network influencing local brands to start serving their ads.
