India to get own HDMI-powered compute stick in Q2

Although Intel already unveiled the world’s first Compute Stick that has been designed to transform an HDTV into a full-fledged computer, India to get its own HDMI-powered compute stick with similar computing experience in the second quarter of this year. TechOne3 has exclusively learnt that the compute stick will be available under Rs. 10,000 price bracket and will run on Windows 8.1 operating system.

In an exclusive conversation with TechOne3, a highly placed source revealed that WPG C&C Computers and Peripherals is in development to launch its first compute stick computer in India in the second quarter. The source said that the device will run on Windows 8.1 operating system out of the box and will have an Intel Atom processor to offer a decent computing experience even through a pocketable size.

“The compute stick will be sized just as a traditional HDMI dongle and will have all the necessary components to deliver a decent computing experience,” the source told TechOne3.

The source confirmed that the compute stick will be manufactured in India at a domestic facility of the Taiwanese company to mark an important milestone in working towards the government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

On the pricing, the source told TechOne3 that the company is in plans to make it close to under Rs. 10,000 to let customers have an affordable alternative to their desktops.

When asked about its similarities with the Intel Compute Stick that was launched in January for $149, the source said that the new device will be especially designed to meet the needs of the Indian computer users and will have certain differences from other HDMI-powered computing dongles.

Taipei, Taiwan-based WPG Holdings on Wednesday launched its palm-sized NuPC in India with a starting price of Rs. 18,999. The company partnered with Intel and Microsoft to offer its new device to the masses in the country.

The NuPC comes in a variety of models, featuring Intel Core i3 and Intel Celeron processors, up to 4GB RAM and 1TB storage. Moreover, it runs on Windows 8.1 operating system and is upgradable to Windows 10.
