HTC could unveil GoPro-like waterproof camera next month

After being in news for a smartwatch, Tawainese smartphone maker HTC now rumoured to be working on a waterproof camera to compete with GoPro Hero series. The camera is said to make its debut alongside a selfie-centric smartphone at a press event next month.

According a report by Bloomberg, citing an internal source, HTC is developing its first camera with waterproof built for extreme sports. The camera with an ultra-wide lens and a 16-megapixel sensor will be compatible with Android and iOS devices, the report said.

The source revealed the news publication that HTC’s answer to GoPro will feature tube-shaped design and would have Bluetooth as well as Wi-Fi connectivity options to pair with smartphones. With wireless connectivity for sharing and remote access, the camera is expected to be operable through Android and iOS apps.

HTC recently sent out invites for a press event scheduled in New York on October 8. This is said to be the place where the Taiwanese company will unveil its first camera and a new smartphone with selfie optimizations.

If HTC will come out with its camera next month, this will expand its current product portfolio and make the company listed in the market of rugged cameras which is currently led by Taoyuan, Taiwan-based GoPro.

The decision of moving towards imaging solution would presumably be taken to generate more revenue in the coming future. Considering the declining amount of its smartphone sales, the rugged camera could not add any high amount of profit in the financial records of HTC but the new move would give a tough competition to its homegrown competitor GoPro.

As we exclusively reported in July, HTC also in development of its Android Wear-based smartwatch. Though the company was initially set to unveil the smartwatch sometime in the third quarter, there is not information available on its release date so far and will likely to be delayed to early next year.
