Facebook launches Slingshot to take on Snapchat

As we reported earlier, Facebook has decided to take on messaging app Snapchat with its Slingshot. The social networking giant has just launched Slingshot for Android and iOS devices to provide a standalone ephemeral messaging experience to its users.

Facebook Slingshot goes official

Slingshot, developed by Facebook Creatives Labs, is an ephemeral messaging app which allows sharing of photos and videos. Contrary to Snapchat, Slingshot users are required to reply back to their friends to view their shots. Here the reply can be a reaction or simply a swipe of the shot itself.

Users can add text on their photos or videos or a caption or can even draw anything on the top of their photos or videos before sharing them with their friends. In addition, a music track can also be added along with photos as well as videos.

While announcing Slingshot, its crew said:

“We’ve enjoyed using Snapchat to send each other ephemeral messages and expect there to be a variety of apps that explore this new way of sharing. With Slingshot, we saw an opportunity to create something new and different: a space where you can share everyday moments with lots of people at once.”
