DataWind retains leadership in India’s tablet market

DataWind has once again proved its success and managed to once again lead the tablet market in India. Market research firm International Data Corporation (IDC) reveals that the Canadian company surpassed Samsung and Micromax to reach the leadership in the market.

The latest IDC report shows that while the overall tablet market in the country contracted by over 18 percent in the fourth quarter of 2015, DataWind managed to capture 20.7 percent market share. Samsung, on the other hand, dropped to the second position with 15.8 percent share followed Micromax, Lenovo and iBall.

“This IDC report reveals that more Indians prefer our tablets than any of our competitors,” said Suneet Singh Tuli, president and CEO of DataWind, in a statement. “It also demonstrates how our transition to local manufacturing and improvements in our sales channels has allowed us to meet the phenomenal demand.”

DataWind surpasses Samsung and Micromax to lead tablet market in India

Mississauga, Ontario-based DataWind offers highly affordable Android tablets in the Indian market. Most of these tablet models come bundled with free unlimited internet access that helps persuade consumers.

Unlike Samsung that targets mid-range and high-end segments, DataWind focuses on entry-level, sub-Rs. 5,000 tablet segment. To maintain affordability, the tablet maker recently started its local manufacturing in India.

DataWind opened its first facility in Amritsar last year. It also partnered with the Telangana government in February to expand its local manufacturing plans in the country. The Telangana factory has a total capacity to produce 20 lakh units per annum.

Apart from its manufacturing expansions, DataWind has Reliance Communications and Telenor as two of the telecom partners. These partnerships enabled the free internet model with its Android running UbiSlate tablets in the country.

“We believe our low-cost tablets and unique mobile Internet connectivity is the only solution on the market that overcomes these obstacles and can bring Internet access to millions of people around the world,” Singh Tuli added.

This isn’t the first time when DataWind topped the market. It was recognised as the leader initially in 2013. Analyst firm CyberMedia Research (CMR) had reported in June 2013 that the company led the tablet market after fulfilling the government-backed Aakash tablet project in 2012.
