Chennai rains: Airtel facilitates free talk time and mobile data to subscribers
As the uninterrupted rains and floods have disrupted communication in Chennai, Bharti Airtel has announced that it has started facilitating free talk time and mobile data to its subscribers. The telecom operator has also extended payment time for postpaid and fixed line subscribers to deliver uninterrupted services.
Airtel prepaid mobile subscribers will receive an auto approval of talk time credit for up to Rs. 30 to let them make free emergency calls to their loved ones directly from their location in Chennai. Also, the operator is provided a free 10 minutes Airtel-to-Airtel calling credit for prepaid subscribers with a validity of two days.
To let mobile phone users connect over social networks and instant messaging apps such as Facebook and WhatsApp for giving real-time updates on Chennai rains, Airtel is offering a free credit of 50MB mobile data for prepaid subscribers with a validity of two days.
“The uninterrupted rains have also resulted in excessive water logging and disruption of essential services in Chennai, thus causing power failures and impacting our services in some regions,” Airtel said in a press statement. “We at Airtel are relentlessly working with the local authorities to enable smooth mobile communication for Airtel customers across the city.”
Authorities are considering the rains as the worst in a century as Tamil Nadu’s capital saw a massive destruction in the past days. Major flight operations at Chennai airport have already been suspended to an extent and schools are remained closed despite the scheduled half-yearly exams by the state board. Train services, especially most of the suburban train services, have also been hit due to water logging on the tracks.
