Casio smartwatch now official with dual-layer display and Android Wear OS

Casio smartwatch is now official. Called the Smart Outdoor Watch (WSD-F10), the smartwatch features a dual-layer display and runs on Android Wear operating system.

The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch is the company’s first smartwatch. It does not have a display similar to what other smartwatches feature. Instead, there is the dual-layer display that has a monochrome panel and an LCD one. Users can switch on the monochrome panel by selecting to a Timepiece mode that enhances the battery life from a day to a month and brings a pure digital watch experience.

Casio is already an experienced player in the world of outdoor watches. Thus, its first smartwatch has a rugged build, with up to 50-meter water resistance and military standard hardware specifications. The watch has a range of sensors, such as a pressure sensor, compass and accelerometer. These sensors enable advanced features like digital compass, air pressure and altitude, sunrise and sunset times, tide graphs and activity graphs among others.

Unlike many other smartwatches that primarily operate through a touchscreen panel, Casio’s offering has three operating buttons with slip-free finish to let you operate its functions even with gloves on. The watch also has a soft urethane plastic made wristband that already featured on some sports watches.

Casio Smart Outdoor Watch specifications:

  • 1.32-inch dual-layer display with color 320 x 320 pixels resolution
  • Android Wear OS
  • Quad-core processor
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.1 (LE)
  • 50-meter water resistant
  • Lithium-ion battery

Google’s Android Wear presence on the Casio smartwatch allows you to use any of your favourite app on the go. Also, there are pre-installed apps including ViewRanger GPS app for trekking, RunKeeper fitness app and MyRadar weather app. You can choose from different watch faces to transform the smartwatch into an outdoor watch. There are also¬†Google services including Gmail, Google Now, Google Maps, Google Fit and voice search. Besides, the company has designed a dedicated Casio Moment Setter+ companion app for Android and iOS running mobile devices.

The Casio Smart Outdoor Watch with its large size case of 61.7×56.4×15.7mm dimensions will be debuted in Japan sometime in late March this year. Thereafter, it is expected to be available for purchase in the US with a price tag of around $500 (approximately Rs. 33,000).

Casio first revealed its smartwatch development plans back in July last year. Apart from Casio, Fossil and TAG Heuer are the two traditional watch makers that recently started developing their smartwatch models to take on the offerings designed by Apple, Samsung and other smartphone manufacturers.
