Barack Obama joins Twitter through @POTUS account

US President Barack Obama has finally joined Twitter through @POTUS account. The official account surpassed the 100,000 follower mark within 30 minutes of posting the first tweet and features a verified sticker to authenticate its ownership.

Obama already has presence on Twitter through @BarackObama account that has been managed by his staff and has over 59.3 million followers. However, the new account seems to be an official step by the world’s most powerful leader to enter the world of microblogging.

The @POTUS account so far has over 1.54 million followers with just three tweets. The following list, on the other hand, has a total of 65 accounts that include official accounts of Columbia University, Harvard University, Chicago Blackhawks, Samantha Power, John Kerry, USTR and White House.

“The @POTUS Twitter account will serve as a new way for President Obama to engage directly with the American people, with tweets coming exclusively from him. President Obama is committed to making his Administration the most open and participatory in history, and @POTUS will give Americans a new venue to engage on the issues that matter most to them,” Alex Wall from the White House wrote in a blog post.

The first three accounts that Obama has followed through his new account is of the White House, the First Lady and Vice President Biden.

The 44th US President posted the first tweet through his new account on late Monday. The tweet has already been retweeted over 222,000 times and has been favourited by over 299,000 Twitter users.

The Twitter account is available as an official account of the President of the United States. This means that it will be transferred to the next duly elected president of the country.
