Asus ZenWatch 2 gets new update to lets you make phone calls

Asus today started rolling out an Android Wear update for its ZenWatch 2. The new software update enables the smartwatch to let you make phone calls.

The Asus ZenWatch 2 is one of the first few Android Wear smartwatches that have a built-in speaker. Leveraging the speaker support, Google developed an ability to enable phone calling support last month.

You can use the ZenWatch 2 to make phone calls when it’s connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth. Also, you can take advantage of the update to receive and answer incoming calls directly from your wrist.

Apart from just allowing you to make and receive phone calls, the new ZenWatch 2 update provides you an option to set audible alarms and hear app notification alerts and audio messages. This makes the ZenWatch 2 a distinct offering from other Android Wear watches such as the Moto 360 (2nd Gen) and LG Watch Urbane.

Gestures support

The update additionally brings wrist gestures that help you navigate your watch. For instance, you can quickly flick your wrist away from you to scroll cards, or slowly turn your wrist away from you and then flick it back to pull down settings from a watch face.

Addtionally, the new Android Wear version enables an ambient mode to offer privacy and reduce battery consumption on your ZenWatch 2. You just need to lower your wrist to remove from the usual viewing orientation and dim the screen brightness.

How to update

The update is rolling out for the Asus ZenWatch 2 (WI501Q and WI502Q) models in phases. This means that it wouldn’t instantly reach your smartwatch. However, you’ll receive a notification your watch when it’s connected to the charger and is within Bluetooth range of your smartphone.

You can manually check the arrival of the update after pairing the ZenWatch 2 with your smartphone. Just tap on ‘System updates’ option after getting into ‘About’ settings. Make sure that you’re connected to the internet to receive the update package.
