Asus Zenfone 3S Max debuts to counter Xiaomi Redmi Note 4

Asus is expanding its smartphone range by adding the Zenfone 3S Max. This new model is set to be launched in India on February 7 and is designed to take on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. While Asus is yet to divulge its price, we spent some time with the latest Zenfone. So here are our first impressions.

Similar to the Redmi Note 4, the Asus Zenfone 3S Max comes with a whole metal design. The build of the new Zenfone offering is identical to the chassis of the Apple iPhone 7. Its price would certainly quite lower than the top-notch iPhone, though.

The Asus Zenfone 3S Max features a 5.2-inch display with a 2.5D curved Gorilla Glass protection on the top. Just like the previous Zenfone Max siblings, the new Asus smartphone has HD resolution with a pixel count of 1280 x 720 pixels. This makes it inferior over the Redmi Note 4 that has a 5.5-inch 1080p (full-HD) display. But, of course, the smaller display size gives a more compact feel and an even handy experience on the Zenfone.

On the hardware front, the Zenfone 3S Max has a 64-bit MediaTek MT6750 chipset with a 1.5GHz octa-core CPU and 3GB of RAM. The smartphone also comes with 32GB onboard storage that can be expanded via a microSD card.

The Asus Zenfone 3S Max has a 13-megapixel rear camera sensor with dual-LED flash and an 8-megapixel front camera sensor. It has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS and a microUSB port in terms of connectivity options and 4G LTE network access.

Though the most of the specifications of the Zenfone 3S Max are not in line with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, the former has giant, 5,000mAh battery that delivered us over two days of power on a single charge. The smartphone also has reverse-charging option to let you charge any of your USB-powered devices.

Apart from the battery, the Asus Zenfone 3S Max has the latest software experience to stand out in the race. Yes, the Zenfone 3S Max is one of the first few smartphones and so far perhaps the only affordable model to offer Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box. The Nougat platform comes with an upgraded ZenUI that has an intuitive notification bar and some customisation options.

The Zenfone 3S Max also comes with a new, frontal fingerprint sensor. It provides an improved fingerprint security over the ones available on the previous Zenfone models.

Overall, the Asus Zenfone 3S Max appears to be the best pick if you need a better battery backup, newer Android and a securer experience against the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. But we’ll hold our verdict until we’ve received its price details.
