Asus debuted in the smartphone market back in 2014 with its affordable Zenfone lineup to take on competitive offerings by Xiaomi and Lenovo. The lineup certainly gave the world some of the best experiences under all affordability. But to continue its charm in 2016, the Taiwanese giant revamped its existing design language and brought the all new Zenfone 3 range. Interestingly, this new variety rivals not any entry-level models but some latest flagships like the OnePlus 3, Xiaomi Mi 5 and even Samsung Galaxy S7.

Under the Zenfone 3 family, Asus has the standard Zenfone 3, Zenfone 3 Laser, Zenfone 3 Ultra and Zenfone 3 Deluxe. Each of these distinguished variants comes in a variety of models. The top-end Zenfone 3 Deluxe is priced at Rs. 62,999 in India, which is even more than the starting price of iPhone 6s Plus. But we are this time focusing on the mid-range segment by covering a detailed review on the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL.

What’s in the Box

The Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL comes with a price tag of Rs. 27,999. It comes in a elegant-looking cardboard retail box that sports the Zenfone 3 branding on top.

Apart from the handset, the box includes accessories like a top-notch headset with soft rubber earplugs for noise cancellation, USB Type-C data cable, fast charging-supported AC adapter and a SIM eject tool.

Design

Asus was previously infamous for using plastic build on its smartphones. But this time, the company has ditched the earlier design pattern and opted for a luxurious glass-and-metal combination which it called the “Zen” design.

On the very first glimpse, the Asus Zenfone 3 ZE552KL resembles the last year’s Galaxy S6. It has a metal frame with rounded corners and brushed finish. Also, the smartphone is encased in 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass that features a 0.18mm diamond-cut bevel and protects the company’s iconic concentric-circle pattern.

The front of the Zenfone 3 has a thin-bezel LCD panel with three capacitive touch keys on its bottom. There is an earpiece on the top with a secondary camera sensor, ambient and proximity sensor module and a LED notification light. Notably, the company has abandoned its iconic metal chin to reduce the size of the new handset.

On the bottom, the Zenfone 3 has a USB-C port, loudspeaker grill and a pinhole microphone.

The top side of the smartphone has a 3.5mm jack (Asus is yet to follow the footsteps of Apple and LeECo) and a secondary microphone.

Asus has provided a hybrid SIM tray on the left with a room for either two SIM cards or one nano-SIM card and one microSD card.

On the right, there is a volume rocker and power/lock key. Both the physical buttons have steel finish.

Back of the Zenfone 3 is as elite as the rear panel of high-end Galaxy models. There is a protruding primary camera sensor that highlights the all-glass coverage and aligns straight with a fingerprint sensor. A battery is packed under the glass protection, thus it’s not a user-replaceable one.

With all the new design aesthetics, the Zenfone 3 ZE552KL weighs 155 grams and sports 7.6mm of thickness.
