The Asus ROG G551J is a good option for the gamers who are looking for a gaming laptop, but don't want to spend over a lakh. However, if one requires a high-end laptop to fulfil all the computing needs, some other decent options are also available under the same price bracket.

Introduction

When it comes to fulfil the demand of hardcore gamers, Asus has its Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand that has quite a decent list of gaming laptops. The brand had previously offered some high-end gaming laptops to compete against some offerings by Alienware and MSI. But recently, the Taiwanese company developed Asus ROG G551J as its new gaming laptop that does not carry a premium price tag. We tested the ROG G551JM variant that has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 860M graphics at our labs for some weeks to pen down its performance in this review. So here begins the action.

What’s in the Box

The Asus ROG G551J is not a high-end gaming laptop and thus its box has minimal graphics. In terms of in-box content, our review unit included an AC adapter, power cord and a quick start guide but the retail package has some additional gaming peripherals to please gamers.

Design

As it is a quite known fact that gamers love bulky laptops to play for long hours, the company has made the built of the Asus ROG G551J as heavy as it seems to be from its appearance. There is a mix-and-match of aluminium and plastic to give a premium feel.

The lid of the Asus ROG G551J has a brushed aluminium cover with an illuminated ROG logo. The logo has red-colored backlit to give monstrous looks and just above the illuminated logo, there is an Asus logo in silver finish.

Opening the lid shows a giant monitor that features a 15.6-inch display panel along with a webcam and Asus branding. For inputs, the laptop has a backlit keyboard with four highlighted WASD gaming keys and there is a multi-touch supported touchpad with right and left clicks. The entire keyboard has red-colored LED lighting and users can adjust its brightness from the function keys. Besides, there are dual loudspeakers just above the keyboard to deliver stereophonic sound experience and five LED notification lights are available below the touchpad to notify on battery, charging, hard drive, flight mode and caps lock activities.
