Asus Chromebit with Google’s Chrome OS coming to India in January 2016

Google is all set to launch the Asus Chromebit in India in January 2016. The device will bring Google’s Chrome OS to HD screens with a price tag of Rs. 7,999.

At the Google for India event in New Delhi on Wednesday, Product Management Director Caesar Sengupta told the attendees that the search giant is in plans to offer affordable computing through the Chromebit. Sengupta also revealed that Asus will launch two Chrome OS running Chromebook models in addition to the Chromebit sometime next month.

The Asus Chromebit will compete against Microsoft Windows running Intel Compute Stick, which was launched in the country for Rs. 9,999 back in July. The Chromebit features HDMI and USB ports as well as Bluetooth 4.0 to transform a monitor into a Chrome OS running computer. It comes preloaded with Google Apps and Chrome web browser. Also, there is Chrome App Store to let users easily download web apps.

The device has a Rockchip RK3288 chipset with a quad-core CPU and 2GB of RAM, and comes equipped with 16GB flash storage. It has YouTube access to offer video streaming and Google Docs to let your create, edit or view documents, spreadsheets and presentations. The device itself doesn’t require any power, but works through an HDMI connection and Bluetooth support is available for connecting peripherals like a wireless keyboard and mouse.

Asus would partner with Flipkart to start selling the Chromebit in India by as early as the first-half of January. Details about marketing strategy and after sales service are yet to be released.
