Apple sells 13 million iPhone 6s units in first weekend following initial launch

Apple has just announced that it has sold more than 13 million iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus units in the first weekend following their initial launch on last Saturday. Both the new iPhone models were unveiled as the successors to the last year’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on September 9.

The company in a press statement said that it has received a record iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus sales in just three days after their initial launch. Compared to the last year’s 10 million units and nine million units reported in 2013, the new sales record certainly shows the initial success of the new iPhone models.

Although the initial launch was limited to a handful of developed markets, the new iPhone models will hit more than 40 additional countries and territories starting October 9 and will be available in over 130 countries by the end of this year.

The list of additional 40 countries where the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus will be available beginning next week includes Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Maldives, Mexico, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Taiwan.

On announcing the record sales, Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said:

“Sales for iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus have been phenomenal, blowing past any previous first weekend sales results in Apple’s history. Customers’ feedback is incredible and they are loving 3D Touch and Live Photos, and we can’t wait to bring iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus to customers in even more countries on October 9.”

The Apple iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus both run on iOS 9 out of the box and feature 3D Touch technology to deliver an advanced user experience. Under the hood, the new iPhone models have Apple A9 chipset and come with a 12-megapixel iSight rear camera sensor and a 5-megapixel FaceTime HD front camera sensor. The iPhones are designed with 7000 series aluminium built and come in a variety of color options, including gold, silver, space grey and the new rose gold metallic finish.

Even 15M would mean stagnation, comparing the last year 10M, having China in opening week this year and considering China holds almost a third of iPhone sales.

Selling 13M is technically a record but a record that shows slowdown of iPhone sales.
