Apple News app released to take on Flipboard, Google News & Weather

Apple at the WWDC 2015 conference in San Francisco released News app for iPhone and iPad. The new app is designed to take on similar news app including Flipboard and Google News & Weather with similar features and iOS exclusivity.

The all new News app on iOS allows publishers to create specific layouts for their articles. For readers, it provides a platform from where they can get all the important stories that they need to read on a particular moment. It has a customised newsfeed called For You that brings topics as well as publisher channels and allows readers to mark some stories favourites.

Apple has also provided Explore section that provides suggestions based on the news stories that readers read in the recent past. This feature is based on some algorithm that are being designed to enhance the usability of Apple News app.

Specifically for publishers, there is Apple News Format that enables them to start listing their stories for News app. The Format provides some customisation features for publishers and allows them to add photos, galleries, audio, video, maps and some rich interactions like animation effects to make their stories more attractive to readers.

Initially, Apple has partnered with about 20 publishers that are representing 50 titles such as Bloomberg, CNN, The New York Times and Time among others. These partner publishers already started developing stories for News app and more will be added in the coming future.

On announcing the release of News app, Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said:

“News seamlessly delivers the articles you want to read in a beautiful and uncluttered format, while respecting your privacy, because Apple doesn’t share your personal data.”

Apple News app will be available through iOS 9 this fall. Publishers can sign up for the partnership program to list their articles by visiting News Publisher webpage on iCloud site.

News app seems to be an alternative to Flipboard, but its limited availability and iOS exclusivity in the initial stage could not result much loss to some of the popular news apps.
