Android Wear gets interactive watch faces, Google Translate integration

Google has announced a new update for Android Wear. The update brings interactive watch faces and comes with Google Translate integration to offer users an upgraded experience on their Android Wear running smartwatches.

With adding interactive watch faces support, Android Wear-based smartwatches now get watch faces that can change their design, reveal more information and even launch a specific app by a single tap. This appears to be a new move to take on Apple Watch and Pebble.

Google has provided an initial list of watch faces that are interactive by their own. These include Bits that provides an easy access to weather, unread mail, missed call and upcoming meetings and Under Armour, which has fitness stats right on the watch face. For photo lovers, Together watch face has additionally been designed that lets users share photos and emojis with their partners’ smartwatches.

Apart from the initial list of a few new watch faces, Google has also opened doors for third-party developers to let them start making new interactive watch faces. Developers need to update their build.gridle to use version 1.3.0 of the Wearable Support library that includes an all-new API to support interactive features on existing and new watch faces.

In addition, there is Wi-Fi support for LG G Watch R. The same support was already rolled out for many newly launched Android Wear watches to offer Wi-Fi, alongside Bluetooth, connectivity support on smartwatches.

Google has also integrated Translate app into Android Wear. This means that Android Wear smartwatches will now be able to translate from one language to another without even an Android smartphone. Further, you can use Google Translate on their Android Wear smartwatches by using your own voice and the integration has 44 international languages.

You don’t even need to select any language and simply need to speak your native language and the integration automatically provides its translation. Also, you can flip your wrist to show the translation to a friend, and when they response, another flip will provide you the result in your language.

Google Translate covers 90 languages on the Web and mobile apps. So the integration on Android Wear would also receive more languages in the coming future.

With interactive watch faces and Google Translate integration, Android Wear will be updated on all the currently available smartwatches in the coming weeks. These smartwatches include LG G Watch, Samsung Gear Live, Motorola Moto 360, Asus ZenWatch, LG Watch Urbane and Sony SmartWatch 3.
