Android One smartphones in India get free Airtel data access

Alongside announcing the launch of Android One smartphones earlier today, Google announced that the entire range of Android One smartphones will be bundled with a promotional offer by Airtel.

Google has partnered with Bharti Airtel to bundle its free data plan with every Android One smartphones. Under this partnership, Android One users on Airtel will be able to get 100MB of data per month for downloading over-the-air (OTA) software updates and 200MB per month for downloading apps from Google Play Store. These downloads will be available for free for the first six months after purchase of every new Android One smartphone.

In a press statement issued on Monday soon after the Google event, Anand Chandrasekaran, Chief Product Officer, Bharti Airtel, said:

“As telecommunication transforms itself into essential services across entertainment, healthcare, education, banking et al, ~$100 smartphones are critical for enabling masses to access these services at ease. Android One is a step towards this segment that will further augment the proliferation of smartphones in the country and empower public at large.”

Micromax Canvas A1, Karonn Sparkle V and Spice Dream UNO are the first three Android One smartphones which are now available exclusively through Amazon, Snapdeal and Flipkart, respectively. Each of the new Android One smartphone runs on Android 4.4 KitKat operating system and comes with a price tag of Rs. 6,399.
