Android maker Andy Rubin could develop new smartphone company

Andy Rubin, the face behind world’s most popular smartphone platform — Android, is now in plans to make a return to the smartphone market by developing its own company. Rubin co-founded Android Inc that Google acquired in 2005 to start developing open-source software versions for mobile devices.

According to a report by The Information, Rubin is in plans to kick-start the development of his smartphone company that would be funded through Playground Global, which he founded as a startup incubator after leaving Google last year. Playground has so far raised about $300 million that appears to be enough to start making Android smartphones.

Rubin is reportedly trying to start acquiring talent for his new company, though details about its launch are yet to be revealed. The new company is likely to follow the direct-to-consumer model that already opted by companies like Motorola, OnePlus and Xiaomi in the past. Also, the first device that Rubin would launch through his own smartphone company is expected to be a high-end offering as he is quite famous for making Android a reality for the world of smartphones.

The smartphone created by Rubin’s company would give a tough competition not only to Apple iPhones but also to Google’s Nexus devices. He could use some artificial intelligence features on his smartphone model as he already has a strong experience on that front.

Rubin was the senior president of Mobile and Digital Content at Google and was the leading the Android team that developed the first range of Nexus smartphones. But in March 2013, the search giant replaced him with Sundar Pichai, who became CEO of Google after Alphabet came in power earlier this year.

Although Google had offered New York-born Rubin the leading position to manage its robotics division, he formally left the company to start focusing on new ventures. Apart from Playground, he started working with Redpoint Ventures to help new startups.

It’s too early to comment on the progress of Rubin’s new company. But of course, this would bring some new options to the Android market that has Samsung as the leading brand followed by some emerging Chinese companies.
