Amazon launches Kindle Unlimited subscription service in India

Amazon today announced the launch of its subscription-based Kindle Unlimited service in India. The new service will be available to the Indian readers with a monthly charge of Rs. 199. However, the company is offering the service for an as low charge as Rs. 99 for this month.

Originally announced in July last year, Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited service lets Kindle e-reader users to read unlimited books or listen to audiobooks after paying a monthly charge. The company has not yet added audiobooks in India but offering a range of ebooks across a wide range of genres such as literature, fiction, health, productivity, business and economics. Also, there are ebooks on  popular biographies and titles specifically targeted at children.

Amazon claims that there are over a million books available through Kindle Unlimited service in India and some Indian authors are also in the list. Some of the popular books available through the service include Chetan Bhagat’s Half girlfriend and Making India Awesome, Immortals of Meluha by Amish, The One You Cannot Have by Preeti Shenoy, Daily Inspiration from the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari by Robin Sharma, War Brides by Helen Bryan, All I Need Is You by Julia London, Stay Hungry Stay Foolish by Rashmi Bansal and 13 Steps to Bloody Good Luck by Ashwin Sanghi among various others.

On announcing the launch of the new service, Sanjeev Jha, Director, Kindle Content, Amazon India, said:

“With Kindle Unlimited, we’re making reading more accessible than ever. For less than the average price of one hardcover bestseller, we’ve made the best digital library in the world available to every corner of India. Whether you like thrillers, romance novels, Sci-Fi or children’s books, with Kindle Unlimited everyone will have the chance to discover not only well-established but also new authors of every genre.”

Readers who want to get an extension on the Kindle Unlimited subscription can opt for Rs. 999 plan for six months or Rs. 1,799 plan for 12 months in addition to the Rs. 199 per month subscription.
