Bharti Airtel on Tuesday announced the launch of Wynk Games in India. The new mobile app emerges months after the launch of Wynk Music and Wynk Movies multimedia content delivering apps by the telecom operator.
Wynk Games is touted as “India’s first mobile app based gaming destination” with a collection of over 2,000 game titles that are available across genres such as cricket, sports, racing, adventure, cards, kids and puzzles. Similar to Wynk Music and Wynk Movies, the app is available for free download for mobile phone users. Airtel users can get its subscription for free, while other users have to pay Rs. 29 to access the game portfolio.
“By subscribing to ‘Wynk Games’, customers can enjoy a host of games at no additional cost – this includes many games that are typically found as ‘paid’ elsewhere,” says Kartik Sheth, CEO — Wynk, Bharti Airtel, in a press statement. “Also, though customers download various games for free, they often can only play a few levels of the game before hitting locked levels and getting prompted to make coin purchases to continue. ‘Wynk Games’ does away with all these challenges and allows customers to enjoy complete games.”
Airtel has partnered with Playphone Inc, a GungHo Subsidiaria and SoftBank Group company based in San Mateo, California, to enable the ad-free gaming experience through Wynk Games. The app is initially offering all its game titles at Rs. 29 monthly subscription for non-Airtel users. But this will be increased to Rs. 99 over time.
Apart from international partnerships for kick-starting the new OTT brand in the country, Airtel is opening doors for Indian developers. “With our partnership, Indian developers on ‘Wynk Games’ will also automatically get published in countries where Playphone is present – thus giving them opportunities to expand their reach across other global as well as emerging markets,” Sheth said, adding that developers need to write about 10 lines of code to enable an access to the subscription platform.
There are games from about 150 developers all across the globe, including Square Enix, Zeptolab, Thumbstar, Tresensa and Bulkypix among others. You can pick titles such as Doodle Jump, Cut the Rope 2, 2048 Puzzle, Tic Tac Toe, Chhota Bheem, Sholay, Hill Bill and Real Cricket 14. Also, these can be played on a variety of hardware, though presently limited to Android devices.
Revealing the existing performance of Wynk brand, Sheth said in the statement that the last year launched Wynk Music has so far received over 15 million downloads of which only one-third are from Airtel users. The app had surpassed the figure of 12 million downloads in November.
